Piyal Dasgupta

Title of talk: "Introduction to premetastatic niche and tumor metastasis: instituting a travel ban"

Summary of talk: This talk will be co-chaired with Dr. Paul Monga. Dr. Dasgupta will introduce the session by providing an overview of the concept of pre-metastatic niche for audience member unfamiliar with or not working in the field of pre-metastatic niche.

Short biosketch: Originally from India, Dr. Dasgupta came to the US in 2000 for a postdoctoral fellowship at the college of Physicians and Surgeons, Columbia University, New York. She moved with her mentor to the Department of Drug Discovery at the H. Lee Moffitt Cancer Center in Tampa Florida. In 2007, she secured a tenure-track faculty position (Assistant Professor) at the Department of Biomedical Sciences at Marshall University; she obtained tenure in 2013.

Dr. Dasgupta was the only junior investigator nationwide selected to receive the ASPET-Astellas Award in Translational Pharmacology in 2009. Marshall University has honored her with the Marshall University distinguished Scholars and Artists award (MU-DASA) in 2009, the John and Francis Rucker graduate faculty award in 2011 and the Dean's Award for Excellence in basic research in 2013.

The focus of her research is to investigate how nicotine, the addictive component of cigarette smoke, facilitates the progression and metastasis of lung cancer. Another important research project in her laboratory is to investigate the potential of capsaicin (the spicy ingredient of chili peppers) and its analogs in the therapy of lung cancer as a single agent or in combination with chemotherapeutic drugs.
